Before beginning her studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in 1999, Marlena Fuerstman had an extensive performing career bringing opera and musical theatre to more than a million adults and children throughout the eastern United States performing a variety of roles, and guest appearances as soloist with the Charleston, Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Harrisburg Symphonies, and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival.
In 2004 Fuerstman received investiture as hazzan from JTSA and thereafter served on the faculty for 5 years.
This summer marks the seventh year as spiritual leader of Bethlehem Hebrew Congregation. During the academic year she lives in Jerusalem where she teaches the BHC beit sefer on-line and cantorial studies.
In 1993, she received international attention with a profile of her life and work on the popular CBS network program, “60 Minutes.” She was featured in 2005 in the Hallmark Network’s national show, “Sewing Seeds” Passover segment.
