Sounds in the Sanctuary Opens With a Time-Honored Favorite

Our time-honored favorite pianist, Bernard Rose, who has opened every SIS season since the series’ inception, masterfully performed a time-honored favorite of Bach: the Goldberg Variations.

Martin Kessel, SIS founding director, introduced Rose, saying:

“Bernie, I will purposely not take any time away from your much-anticipated recital today – only to say that this will be your twelfth appearance in our Sounds of the Sanctuary series spanning the ten years 2014-2024. You have been our opening artist for all those years, except for Covid in 2020. We have been continuously thrilled by both your solo performances and those together with the excellent artists you chose to perform with…Thank you for all of those memorable performances and we look forward to our continuing association in the years to come.”

The thirty Goldberg Variations, which take over an hour and are traditionally played without a break by the soloist, are demanding to perform, but were a delight to hear from such an accomplished pianist.

“I have listened to many piano recitals in my somewhat long life. This one was truly exceptional. I heard every note and every note mattered,” said Ed Clark, Sounds in the Sanctuary Associate Director.

Delicious refreshments were provided afterwards by Gail Robinson.

The next Sounds in the Sanctuary concert takes place on Friday, July 26 at 5 pm, and features classical and jazz numbers from the “Odesa Boys”: Julian Milkis on clarinet and Maxim Lubarsky at the piano.
