Sukkah Takedown
By Martin Kessel
Thanks to Jay Johnson, Josh Lieberman, Gordon Bennett, Martin Kessel and a cameo appearance by Alice and Leslie Dreier, this year's Sukkah was taken down in about 2 hours.
The Sukkah take-down crew were greeted by overnight snow on the ground and on the matted roof of the Sukkah. Temperatures were barely above freezing but warmed slowly in the bright sunshine.
The day before, Jay Johnson took down the Sukkah tarp walls; thankfullly we did not have to deal with wet tarp.
After the lights were taken down the main task was to remove the snow-covered roof reed mats ("Schach"). At the price of a snow shower or two down the volunteers’ backs, all the mats came down and were spread in the parking lot to dry. Jay moved things along by brushing the excess snow off the mats, which were finally left, unrolled. in the basement to completely dry.
After that, the sukkah frame came down quickly and was carefully disassembled into individual pole lengths. These, together with the corners and connectors have been carefully stored away by Jay, are ready for next Sukkot.
For the final hakafa of Simchat Torah, our five Sifrei Torah were safely locked away.
I venture to say this was BHC's latest-ever sukkah take-down and first, we believe, to happen after a snowfall!
Thanks again to our small crew.
