Led by Rabbi Kirshbaum and fueled by your insights, these sessions place current feature films in conversation with midrash [ancient stories that expand on Torah]. The weekly Torah portion is our point of departure for examining a relevant midrash, after which we screen clips from significant movies. Inevitably, we end up mining the midrash together with the movie for pure gold – new knowledge, new depths of feeling, new ways to think about living in the world.
Join us for any or all these study sessions – each is free-standing. NO prior knowledge of Torah, midrash, or movies necessary.
Films so far have included the Israeli comedy Ushpizin and Terrence Malick’s 2011 masterpiece, The Tree of Life. The Nov 13thsession will feature Sweet Land and the Nov 27thsession, The Descendants. Participants are alerted to each upcoming film about a week and a half before each session in case they want to stream it in advance. It’s possible, though, to enjoy and contribute to the session without having seen the film. Newcomers always warmly welcomed.
