The Friday The Rabbi Slept Late - Books of Jewish Interest 2023

Books of Jewish Interest met Wednesday, August 9th in person and on Zoom for a lively discussion of Friday The Rabbi Slept Late by Harry Kemelman, published in 1964. The book is the first in a series featuring Rabbi David Small as a detective. Sixteen people came in person, while 35 came on Zoom.

Though some aspects of the book were dated (we now have women rabbis and participation on the Board); the problems facing a Jewish congregation within a larger Christian world rang true today.  We conversed about many topics raised in the book, which included the role of a Rabbi, reasons to join a congregation and our concerns about appearances to the non-Jewish community.

Thanks to the Bethlehem library for the beautiful space and technology, Gail for organizing and providing snacks, and Martin at the computer.
